I have heard a lot of chatter about how the Borough of Steelton owns so many properties around town so I did a little searching and compiled a list from Dauphin County Property records. I did this to get an overview and share my findings. Between the borough, the Authority, and the Steelton Community Development Foundation (SCDF) & Steelton Economic Development Corp (SEDC) (Not actually borough properties but added in as well) the list amounts to 104 properties out of 3533 records.
Now this doesn’t actually mean the borough owns 104 separate residential and commercial properties. Many of the properties owned by the Authority are used for borough business like water plant and salt shed and such. Other uses for various properties are parks, municipal building, ect.
After reviewing the list I came up with these figures:
- 8 Residential Properties
- 13 Residential Lots
- 8 Park’s Zones
- 9 Commercial Properties
- 1 Industrial Zoned Property/Lot
- 2 Municipal Properties
- Out of the 21 Residential Zoned Properties 12 were purchased or gifted for $1 or less.
- Out of the 9 Commercial Zoned Properties 4 were purchased for $1 or less
This leaves about 37 properties on Adams street that I have grouped into that redevelopment project.
After you subtract the parks, Borough Hall, Fire Station, Authority Properties, SCDF, SEDC, and the Adams street project this leaves you with 31 properties of which 16 were purchased for $1 or less.
I have been led to believe that the borough owned a huge amount of properties in the Borough that they were not doing anything with. In reality it comes down to about 31 property records out of 3533 (0.877%) listed by Dauphin County. Now this list probably not 100% correct but it what was publicly available to me. Even if you add in every property owned by any entity of the borough or partnership it equates to only 2.944% of all property records.
So now armed with some hard info we know the borough has 31 properties besides the 2 large redevelopment projects we need to attract investors into. Some of these property could also be used to for new parks or non-profit organizations to aid our community.
There is a lot of work to do to rebuild Steelton but having a good understanding of what were working with is a place to start.
