Whats Happening…. Steelton Borough Council?
When I first came on Council in 2016 while attending a Dauphin & Lebanon Borough Association Meeting with now Mayor Marcinko we met with a contact for APPI Energy who is a partner with the Dauphin & Lebanon Borough Association.
We talked with Borough Manager Doug Brown to investigate what could be offered to lower the electric utility bills for the borough. After several meets we were present with an agreement to purchase electricity at a fixed rate of $0.5979 per kilowatt hour for a period of three years from July 1st, 2016 till June 30th, 2019. At the time the Borough was on a variable rate plan and average a rate of $0.07992 per kilowatt hour.
At the beginning of 2018 I performed an analysis of the savings between the yearly electric cost between the two years of 2015 and 2017. This analysis was presents to Council and shows a saving of $25,769.53 when comparing 2015 to 2017.
With the results reviews I asked Doug Brown to reach out to APPI Energy to get a quote for a period to from July 1st, 2019 to June 30th, 2022 just to review the current electric rates and see if it was a good time or a bad time to purchase an energy generation agreement. In addition, I wanted to get the ball rolling, so we didn’t forget to review new rates before our fixed rate agreement expired and a variable rate kicked in.
The finance committee met with APPI Energy where the Borough was offered a year contract to purchase energy generation for a fixed rate of $0.04926 per kilowatt hour. This is a 21.4% savings over the current fixed rate.
On October 15th, Council approved an Energy generation agreement with Talon Energy to purchase electricity between July,1st, 2019 and June 30th, 2024 at the fixed rate of $0.04926 per kilowatt hour allowing the Borough of Steelton to continue the current energy saving brought by Council in 2016 to continue thru next July at which time an addition 21.4% saving will continue till 2024.
